Allie backed up against Drifter’s chest and pointed a shaking finger at the machine. “W-what’s that?”

Drifter grasped my arms. “A tank droid.”

“I’m guessing that means attack.”

“Most definitely.”

I tilted my head back to look into his worried face. “So, what do we do?”

Another of the compartments opened and a few seconds later another needle-crazed droid emerged. Drifter grabbed her hand and turned them away from the machines. “We run.”

“Again?” Allie yelped before she was pulled down the passage.

The droids beeped and gave chase. These ones weren’t quite as fast as their smaller counterparts, but they kept up with the pair. They turned to and fro, finding that other corner compartments had opened in preparation for their arrival. They would pass through the intersection, and a moment later another droid would emerge until they had a small army at their backs.

Allie’s lung pulsed with pain as she stumbled along behind Drifter. “I… I can’t… keep up.”

Drifter’s eyes narrowed as they reached an intersection where the compartments were closed. He skidded to a stop in the center of the crossroads and whipped his head left and right. One of the compartment doors slid open to their left. He tugged them over to the hole and pushed Allie in front of him.

“Jump in!”

Allie dug her heels into the floor and skidded to a stop against the small lip that surrounded the opening. She also jerked out her arms and snagged the edges of the hole. Allie whipped her head to Drifter at her side and glared at him. “Are you nuts?”

He raised both eyebrows and a slight glimmer of mischief appeared in his blue eyes. “Yes, but that’s a discussion for another time. Now down you-” He tried to push her down the shaft, but she held tight.

“Wait a minute!” Allie shouted, and Drifter stopped his pushiness. “Have you gone mad? Those things are down there!”

“Yes, but they’re also up here and- He glanced over his shoulder as a shadowy form flickered into view, “quickly catching up to us.”

Allie leaned in a little and looked down the hole. The round tube stretched into darkness. “But can’t they just poke us with their needles?”

“They can’t engage them while in their delivery tubes.”

“Are you sure?”

“No, but do you have a better plan?”

Allie pursed her lips as she looked past him and at the oncoming armed droids. The creatures appeared around the curve of the ship with their needle pincers drawn and squeezed. She whipped her head back to the hole, took a deep breath, and dove feet-first into the tube. Drifter followed close behind her and she could feel his feet brush her hair that flapped behind her.

Allie couldn’t tell how far they’d gone when a shadow loomed up out of the darkness. Her heart skipped a beat when she recognized the domed top of one of the attack droids. “Drifter!”

Allie barely had time to shout when her feet slammed into the metal head. Her legs absorbed most of the impact, but one foot slipped on the domed head and her ankle twisted slightly.
